About the Painting:

Mate, an herb-based drink popular in South America, holds immense social and cultural significance. Friends, family members, and even strangers come together to share mate, fostering a sense of camaraderie and connection. The act of preparing and passing the mate gourd (seen here)  and bombilla (metal straw) is a symbol of hospitality and unity. By presenting the mate gourds here in still life, the artist pays homage to friendship, trust, inclusivity and a willingness to engage with others. It also speaks to the role of cultural tradition in creating a sense of belonging.
