The creation of a truthful self portrait takes boldness and honesty. Looking in a mirror, taking a selfie, painting a self-portrait are all ways to remind ourselves we are alive, we are here in time and space.
The artist is seen here as pensive, meditative, perhaps trying to make sense of the myriad of thoughts and sensations represented by the chaotic brushstrokes of white all around his head. We see indeed, the artist wanting to be still.
