“Madonna col Bambino,” Italian for “Madonna with Child,” refers to a recurrent theme in Christian art that depicts the Virgin Mary holding an infant Jesus. This enduring theme has its roots in early Christian art from the 2nd century and gained prominence during the medieval and Renaissance periods. During this transformative period, the Madonna evolved from symbolizing purity and motherhood to embodying the epitome of maternal love and grace.
In this contemporary rendition, we are drawn into a scene where a mother, Guille Smith Serna, gazes at her child, the artist’s long-time friend Ernesto Smith, with protective arms wrapped lovingly around him. Guile, originally from Tamaulipas, Mexico, pursued a career in medicine in her home state before immigrating to the United States. Her motivation for this journey was her unwavering desire to provide her family with the best opportunities for successful futures.
This portrait reveals a luminous halo encircling the angelic Guile. Tragically, Guile’s life was cut short by cancer in 2016. She never had the opportunity to meet her future grandchildren, savor the joys of retirement, or witness the outcomes of her migration—the vibrant and prosperous lives of her two sons. However, as the artist tenderly portrays, Guile’s presence endures, leaving an indelible mark in her sons’ lives. This poignant portrait serves as a timeless reminder that even in her physical absence, her love continues to shine brilliantly, providing solace and guidance. The artist’s portrayal captures the essence of maternal devotion, a force that transcends the physical realm and remains an eternal source of strength and inspiration.
